Written on the 20 of March, 2024 It's great —and a bit eerie— when the musical stars align so perfectly. Today's concert was a great amalgamation of couplings: a highly compenetrated duo of musicians in cellist Maya Tucker and pianist Xingtong Ma, and a very fitting musical selection to suit the mood of the day through Brahms, Chopin, Ola Gjeilo and Camille Saint-Saëns. The beautiful weather we've been enjoying likely contributed to the impressive turnout of over 200 music-lovers, amongst which at least one —me— had never had occasion to listen to Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, whose pensive ballads —nearly minuets— «Madison» and «The Hudson» stood out for their lyrical beauty; these pieces found good company in a stirring interpretation of the third part of Chopin's emotive «Sonata in G minor» and the first three movements of Brahms' «Sonata n.1 in E minor».
